Baptism
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing then in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you." (Mt. 28:19-20)
Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway of life in the Spirit and the door that gives access to the sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; wen become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission; "baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word." (CCC 1213)
Confirmation
"Now, when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for then that they might receive the Holy Spirit; for it had not yet fallen in any of them, but the had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit." (Acts 8:14-17)
Confirmation perfects baptismal grace; it is the sacrament which gives the Holy Spirit in order to root us more deeply in the divine filiation, incorporate us more firmly into Christ, strengthen our bond with the Church, associate us more closely with her mission and help us bear witness to the Christian faith in words accompanied by deeds. (CCC 1316)
The Eucharist
"Jesus said: 'I am the living bread that came down form heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever... he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life and.. abides in me, and I in him.'" (Jn. 6:51,54,56)
The Eucharist is the heart and the summit of the Church's life, for in it Christ associates his Church and all her members with the sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving offered once and for all on the cross to his Father; by his sacrifice he pours out the graces of salvation on his Body which is the Church. (CCC 1407)
Reconciliation
"On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, Jesus showed himself to his apostles. He breathed on them and said to them: 'Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.'" (Jn. 20:19,22-23)
Those who approach the sacrament of Penance obtain pardon from God's mercy for the offense committed against him and are at the same time reconciled with the Church which they have wounded by their sins and which by charity, by example and by prayer labors for their conversion. (CCC 1422)
Anointing the Sick
"Is any among you sick? let him call for the presbyters of the Church and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of the faith will save the sick man and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven." (Jas. 5:14-15)
By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and the glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them. And indeed, she exhorts them to contribute to the good of the People of God by freely uniting themselves to the Passion and death of Christ. (CCC 1499)
Sacrament of Matrimony
St. Paul said: "Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the Church... This is a great mystery and I mean in reference to Christ and the Church." (Eph. 5:25,32)
The Matrimonial covenant, by which a man and woman form with each other an intimate communion of life and love, has been founded and endowed with its own specific laws by the Creator. By its very nature, it is ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament. (CCC 1660)
